Entries Now Open for 2025 SEMA Battle of the Builders

DIAMOND BAR, CA (05.30.25) – Applications are now open for the 2025 SEMA Battle of the Builders Presented by Mother’s Polish at  www.semabotb.com. Now in its 12th year, SEMA Battle of the Builders is the industry’s leading custom car building competition, providing SEMA Show builders with an opportunity to showcase their talents in front of a global audience.

“It’s inspiring to see SEMA Show builders continue to push the boundaries of automotive customization,” said RJ de Vera, SEMA Vice President of Marketing. “We look forward to helping them grow and progress as we celebrate standout builds that highlight the ingenuity of our industry.”

The 2025 SEMA Battle of the Builders Presented by Mother’s Polish will recognize class champions in four categories — Hot Rod & Hot Rod Truck; 4 Wheel Drive & Off-Road; Sport Compact, Import Performance, Luxury & Exotic; and Young Guns — and one of these four class winners will be crowned the overall Battle of the Builders champion. Industry experts serve as judges and review all qualifying applications, including vehicle descriptions and photos, before walking the SEMA Show floor to review the builds in-person and selecting the Top 10 finalists in each category. The finalists are then narrowed down to the Top 3 in each category, and these 12 finalists become the judges and select the winner of each category and the overall champion.

“Some of the people we look up to the most in the industry have won this award, so to appear alongside those people is really incredible,” said Noah Alexander, winner of the 2024 SEMA Battle of the Builders competition with his ‘68 Dodge Charger. “The best for us was the incredible people we met. It was just amazing to talk to all of these other builders and hear what they do.”

Supporting Young Builders
To encourage young builders to pursue their passions, the SEMA Battle of the Builders Young Guns category is open to builders who are 29 years old and younger at the time of the SEMA Show. Young Guns entries may also be selected to compete in one or more virtual Golden Ticket competitions throughout the summer for the chance to win a prize package that includes transportation of the vehicle to the SEMA Show along with travel and hotel accommodations.  Once at the SEMA Show, the Top 10 Young Guns finalists, as selected by the judges, compete in their own separate competition to determine their Top 3. This unique Young Guns competition format, launched for the first time in 2024, provides yet another career exposure opportunity for the next generation of custom car builders.

“With the world’s most skilled vehicle builders coming together to compete for the title of a lifetime, the SEMA Young Guns category offers a platform unlike any other for young builders to expand their notoriety in the industry,” added de Vera.

2025 SEMA Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

DIAMOND BAR, CA (05.28.25) – The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) has announced the newest members of its prestigious Hall of Fame: Luanne Brown, George Lathouris, John McLeod, and Larry Pacey. The industry is invited to welcome them into the Hall of Fame at the SEMA Leaders & Legends Gala on July 25 in Universal City, Calif.

“The automotive aftermarket industry has grown in remarkable ways thanks to the contributions of this year’s Hall of Fame inductees,” said SEMA President and CEO Mike Spagnola. “Through their leadership and innovation, they not only changed the course of the industry’s history but inspired and shaped the success of those around them.”

Luanne Brown

Fueled by entrepreneurial drive and deep technical expertise, Brown founded eTool Developers in 2001, building proprietary platforms that filled critical gaps in website development and product data management. Her work empowered manufacturers, resellers, solution providers, and rep agencies to adapt to an ever-changing digital landscape, streamlining operations, improving data exchange, and driving real business growth.

Brown served as a SEMA Board Member from 2008-2015 and has held leadership positions in multiple SEMA communities, including SEMA Cares, the SEMA Businesswomen’s Network (SBN), and as board liaison to the Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO). She has been a long-standing and supportive SEMA PAC member over the years and is vice president of the Automotive Aftermarket Charitable Foundation (AACF).

“To be honored in this way by my industry family is amazing. I am very grateful for SEMA. This is the highlight of my career,” said Brown.

George Lathouris

A 45-year industry veteran, Lathouris is well known for his personal and professional success that has been built on customer relationships and partnerships. From his first job at American Speed Equipment in the late 1970s to his last position as vice president at The Warn Group, Lathouris is recognized by peers for always putting the customer first and exceeding expectations both with the customer and his fellow employees.

Lathouris was named the 2013 SEMA Person of the Year, served as SEMA Light Truck Accessories Alliance (LTAA; now the SEMA Truck & Off-Road Industry Alliance) chair from 2009-2013, and is credited with driving considerable growth of the SEMA Pinewood Derby benefiting SEMA Cares charities.

“I was stunned. Time seemed to pause, and I thought in that instant that I was able to stand alongside of all of the great men and women who’ve made our industry such a powerhouse throughout the years,” said Lathouris on receiving the news he’d been inducted into the SEMA Hall of Fame.

John McLeod

McLeod has been actively involved in the automotive and SEMA communities for over 23 years, starting from his earliest days working with Classic Instruments in custom automotive builds in the late 1990s, culminating with his acquisition of the company in 2001. Under his leadership, Classic Instruments evolved from a small niche operation into an industry cornerstone, continually pushing boundaries of design, technology, and quality standards in automotive instrumentatio

McLeod’s personal ethos—founded on quality, integrity, and community service—shaped his influential tenure volunteering within and leading the SEMA Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA). His Education Days and Builders Panel initiatives fostered a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing, as well as provided industry veterans an opportunity to pass on critical insights, enhancing the professionalism and knowledge base of the automotive community.

“When you look at the list of members like Dave McClelland, Smokey Yunik, Brian Applegate, Carroll Shelby, and so many more amazing people that are my heroes—people I have looked up to for so long—I am honored to share this space with them,” said McLeod. “I am hopeful that I can inspire at least one young person to be part of such an amazing industry like so many of them did for me.”

Larry Pacey

Pacey’s 55 years of industry experience began in 1969 when he opened National Carburetor Exchange in a 600 sq. ft. building, rebuilding and installing carburetors in South Florida. Over a five-year period, the business evolved into a retail parts store handling many performance lines in addition to the carburetor line. In 1974, the business became a warehouse distributor carrying all performance lines and selling wholesale only. The business’s name changed to National Auto Parts Warehouse Dba National Performance Warehouse (NPW), and in the early 1980s it continued to expand into traditional auto parts, with additional warehouses in Orlando and West Palm Beach, Fla.

Pacey’s vision united many regional distributors under one larger, more sustainable umbrella. Today, NPW operates in over 1,500,000 square feet of warehouse space with 23 distribution centers. NPW services over 30,000 accounts in North America and several international markets. Pacey served on the SEMA Board of Directors from 1994 to 1996.

“After giving what I have given to this amazing industry, it feels like a full-circle moment for me,” said Pacey. “I am also elated to be able to share it with my wife and my sons because I could not have done it without them. I would also like to thank SEMA for this prestigious award and all the great employees at NPW that have helped me for 56 years.”

In addition to formally inducting Brown, Lathouris, McLeod, and Pacey as SEMA Hall of Fame members during the 2025 SEMA Leaders & Legends Gala on July 25, the event will include recognition of the newly elected and outgoing SEMA Board members.

That first leg was 1611 miles behind the wheel. Chewy is Brian’s pet bull dog that is a regular at all events.

The first fuel stop, of 15+ on the trip, was in Tehachapi CA.
The 3 legs of the Arc Audio journey mapped out.

The KICKER SQ@HQ at KICKER’s world headquarters was orchestrated by KICKER Brand Promoter Ernie Ficklin to connect area IASCA and MASQ competitors for a competition that also included many enthusiast from the area. The event began early Saturday May 17th morning and wrapped that evening, following the Award ceremony. “It was terrific to welcome Brian to our SQ@HQ event. His personal dedication to the 12volt industry connects to KICKER’s mission to connect consumers with enjoyment while driving their rides. Arc Audio’s presence definitely contributed to the success of our first SQ@HQ.”

Open road in Arizona headed east to Stillwater OK.
All was set early Friday morning.

In an amazing story of fate, Brian Mitchell’s Copper 12volt won the top award at the event. KICKER founder Steve Irby autographed the KICKER square sub that was featured on the Money Round Trophy crafted by Mark Eldridge. Within hours Saturday evening, Mitchell had loaded everything and departed for the 1951 miles to be on site at the PNWCEE in Seattle for Monday.

Once arriving at the Double Tree in Seattle the 12volt Copper Arc Audio car was showcased at the hotel entry. During the 3-Day event Mitchell was very active in training sessions plus showing products in the booth on the shelf floor. Networking with 12volt industry members also was a important element of the event.

Late in the afternoon Steve Irby autographed the Money Round Trophy that Brian Mitchell won just a few hours later.
This gas stop in Denver headed northwest to Seattle.
Out the window in Oregon a couple hundred miles from Seattle.

When it came time to prepare to leave for the Arc Audio HQ in Modesto, there was a big surprise… The Arc Audio trailer had been stolen from the hotel parking lot. Authorities were notified and within hours the Arc Audio trailer was located. The trailer have been robbed of Mitchell‘s tools and there were no tires on the trailer. The trailer graphics also experience damage. Between the loss of the tools, cost to replaced the tires along with the damage to the $6000 graphic on the trailer the total loss approached $15,000.
