Explore the Thrilling Allure of Overlanding at the 2023 SEMA Show

DIAMOND BAR, CA (08.18.23) – As the world evolves and travel preferences shift, the exhilarating realm of overlanding is captivating hearts and minds, not just in remote corners of the world but increasingly across the United States. This year, the much-anticipated SEMA Overland Experience returns to the 2023 SEMA Show, October 31-November 3 in Las Vegas, promising attendees and media a thrilling journey into the expanding universe of overlanding, complete with fresh opportunities and insights. And lucky for you, some exhibitors have agreed to give SEMA News readers a sneak peek at their displays (more details below).

Nestled in the Diamond Lot adjacent to the West Hall, this year’s SEMA Overland Experience boasts a new outside location that sets the stage for an immersive and customized environment. Paired perfectly with the West Hall’s showcase of trucks, SUVs, off-road vehicles, powersports and utility vehicles, this Show feature promises to be a haven for enthusiasts and industry players alike.

As experts can attest, one of the most intriguing aspects of overlanding is its ability to transcend geographical boundaries. While overlanding has traditionally thrived in remote parts of the world, its popularity is surging across the nation. The SEMA Overland Experience is a testament to this trend, offering attendees a firsthand look at the latest products and vehicles explicitly tailored for the overlanding experience.

Another highlight is the presence of industry experts within the SEMA Overland Experience, who will identify key opportunities and trends within the market that can potentially open new vital profit centers for businesses. With their insights, automotive professionals can gain a comprehensive understanding of how to position themselves effectively in this dynamic landscape.

Of course, the builds of the SEMA Overland Experience will be nothing short of awe-inspiring (see a sneak peek, below). A plethora of customized vehicles will encompass everything from pop-top-equipped trucks to sprinter vans to specialty trailers, as well as a variety of recreational and utility gear, including refrigerators, storage racks and units, makeshift kitchens, solar chargers and other electronics designed to make off-the-grid travel for work and play fun, productive and convenient.

“The Overland Experience spells lots of opportunity for aftermarket companies looking to diversify and grow their offerings,” said SEMA Trade Show Director Andy Tompkins. “More than just a display, this area acts as both an educational tool and a promotion zone for the burgeoning overlanding market. It’s a chance to delve deep into the lifestyle and gear associated with this adventure-driven niche.”

For businesses seeking a stake in the overlanding market, the SEMA Overland Experience provides a unique avenue for exposure. Limited opportunities exist to place static vehicle displays and showcase vehicles and trailers, offering a chance to put your offerings in the worldwide spotlight. SEMA thanks the current Overland Experience sponsors (in alphabetical order) American Expedition Vehicles, KW Automotive, LinksWell Automotive, LiquidSpring, Mackin Industries, ORACLE Lighting, Powerbuilt and Caterpillar, Scosche Industries and first-time exhibitor Winnebago.

DOW Technologies Hosts Dow Elite Dealer Retreat

TAMPA, FL (08.17.23) – DOW Technologies hosted their fourth DOW Elite Dealer Retreat July 31 and August 1 at the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee, Georgia. DOW brought in over 250 customer attendees representing 141 companies to attend the two-day event.

The DOW Elite Dealer Retreat brings dealers to a relaxed, resort atmosphere where they attend manufacturer trainings, product demonstrations, a trade show and get a good mix of networking and fun. On Monday, dealers heard from Bryan Schmitt of Mobile Solutions and Rich De Sclafani of RDV Automotive Technologies. The two talked about the difficulties small business owners face and highlighted the value of working with good partners. Drew Fischer, director of sales at DOW Technologies, related the stories told by Schmitt and De Sclafani to the struggles the attendees face and how DOW can be a partner to help them with those issues. After the opening ceremony, dealers attended five unique sessions with different manufacturers that offered training and an opportunity to provide feedback. The evening was capped off with a cocktail hour that featured yard games and a networking dinner.

On Tuesday morning, dealers attended business improvement sessions that were designed to highlight opportunities for business owners to expand their offerings and add revenue. Following the classes, dealers attended a trade show featuring 40 manufacturers and vendors. After the trade show, dealers and manufacturers spent the afternoon networking along the shore of beautiful Lake Oconee. DOW offered the opportunity for attendees to take a relaxing ride on a pontoon boat, swim in the pool or lake, compete in games for great prizes, or check out a car show that featured demo cars from Alpine, Sony, Metra, Triton, JVC, Kicker and Gladen.

“We’re thrilled to have orchestrated this wonderful opportunity for dealers and manufacturers to reconnect in a relaxed setting, fostering meaningful conversations and valuable interactions,” remarked Drew Fischer. “At DOW, we’re committed to consistently exploring innovative avenues for distinctive programs and services. This event stands as a genuine hallmark, setting us apart within the industry.”

Quotes from participating dealers

“The DOW Elite Retreat was freaking awesome!!!
DOW has done an amazing job of setting up this event at a gorgeous Ritz Carlton resort at Lake Oconee. As soon as we arrived, they handed us our badges, merch bag, and a Samsung Portable Projector that I immediately geeked out over! The vendor classes were exceptional, not only did they show us the latest and greatest products (Sony’s new OLED made my eyes melt) but also gave us tips and hidden menus that not many people know about. I was able to link up with sales reps to get me on the track to become a certified dealer for their products. The event gave me the chance to meet and network with other dealers in my local area and out of state that I can collaborate with on projects and ideas. Being on the CI part of DOW, having the opportunity to see all the 12volt technology that they are putting in cars and boats makes me want to expand more into other ventures.”
Michael Irwin, Going Digital Inc, Boca Raton, FL

“Our time at the DOW Retreat was amazing. They really know how to treat their dealers while still educating us on new and exciting products. We got to meet so many other business owners like us.
It was truly eye opening to see all the new products and possibilities we could bring back. We are excited for the next DOW Retreat already.”
Jessica Sharpe, Georgetown TV & Audio LLC, Georgetown, TX

“The Elite Retreat was an overall great experience. It was an opportunity for us to connect with other people in our industry and talk to representatives from our many vendors. We came away with an immense amount of new knowledge that we can now use to better serve our customers.”
Mike Morales, Quality TV, North Port, FL

“Got a lot of information on CI solutions that I’ve never installed before. I was engaged on everything that I saw. It gave me ideas and helped me see other money avenues. Of all the events that I’ve been to, this has been the best. You all went out of your way to accommodate your dealers and show us appreciation.”
Ty Claiborne, Local TV Pro LLC, Maryville, TN

Quotes from participating manufacturers

“DOW’s Elite Retreat continues to deliver solid ROI, but you have to engage and not approach this as just another trade show selling event or product training opportunity. Its dealer relationship marketing throughout the entire high class event, blended with focus group insights stemming from your breakout sessions. And finally, capping it all off with a trade show frenzy of two to three hours pitching your latest and greatest products and brand value approach. The event delivers on all levels.”
Rick Kojan, Sony

“DOW’s Elite Retreat was overall a great success for Alpine! One of the major benefits for Alpine was the ability to interact one-on-one with dealers during all aspects of the event and provide live demos. The training classes provided us multiple groups throughout the day that allowed us to answer questions, gather feedback directly, and gave dealers the chance to be heard. An amazing event that creates lasting partnership for all that attend.”
Roy Meyer, Alpine

“The 2023 Dow Elite Retreat truly captured what being a partner vendor is all about. I received so many positive comments about the phenomenal venue, but more importantly, the feeling of being a part of a special family. The connection between the ownership, management, and sales team at Dow with the many customers and vendors, is forging a very rare bond. Being able to collaborate with so many other companies and having the opportunity to hear the many different ideas, makes it a very special event. The topper was when John Yodzis took notice of the younger generation with their parents and expressed how much he loved that they were there soaking it all in. That brought it all into a perspective of continuing a great tradition and looking to future generations of entrepreneurs and innovators in our industry.”
Ray Sanchez, Ethereal

“I have been to a lot of distributor events over the years but this had to be one of the best I have ever had the privilege of attending. The Dow team were spot on in regards to location, dealer attendance, and the mix between business and fun.”
Paul Trueman, SiriusXM

KICKER Plays Host to Second In-House Training for 2023

STILLWATER, OK (08.16.23) – KICKER played host to more than 20 dealers and rep firms here last week during a two-day training and tour of KICKER World Headquarters, which included hands-on experience with KICKER product and discussions with company executives from Sales, Marketing, Product Planning, and Research and Development. The tour began with the background story about the brand’s inception, shared by KICKER founder and CEO Steve Irby.

“It’s always enjoyable to welcome our dealer guests onto our campus,” said Tom Heath, KICKER Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We hope our visitors learn a little bit about what makes KICKER different, and we tend to get a lot of positive feedback after they’ve spent time with us for a few days.”

“It’s easy to look at KICKER from afar and think it’s another huge corporate entity,” said Bob Hernandez of distributor GoFast Solutions . “The truth is that’s not accurate at all. Hearing Steve address the group is heartwarming. I’ve heard him do it several times and I’m touched every time. The peek behind the curtain at all the different departments – it gives great insight.”

The class received hands-on training with the SoloX Subwoofer reconing process, led by KICKER Tech Force training manager Aaron Malin. Malin also led the group on an extensive tour of the facility, including a chance to audition speakers in the company’s listening lab.

In other activities, the group experienced a demo of the outrageous KICKER Ford Bronco, equipped with nine, 12-inch SoloX subwoofers and 36,000 watts worth of KICKER Warhorse amplification (anticipated release in late 2023). The Bronco will make another appearance this year at KnowledgeFest in Dallas, and again at the SEMA Show in November.

Marking a KICKER dealer-visit first, personnel from authorized dealer Brian’s Motorsports (Hendersonville, Tenn.) brought “Big Debra,” a converted bread truck, from their home base outside of Nashville, as well as their in-house videographer to document the experience. The modified ride features a pair of enormous KICKER Quad Boxes loaded with Solo-Baric L7R Square Subwoofers, KS-Series Coaxials, and five CXA-Series Amplifiers. The three-minute recap can be seen on the Brian’s Motorsports YouTube channel.

Alpine Continues to Invest in Alpine Park with the First AI Character Integration on Roblox

AUBURN HILLS, MI (08.16.23) – Following the launch of “Alpine Park” on Roblox in May, Alps Alpine North America, Inc. (“Alpine”) continues to invest in the virtual world and younger fan base by adding a new AI (artificial intelligence) character integration to the game experience. Designed in collaboration with Inworld AI, Trigger XR, and Stage3 Agency, Alpine is the first commercialized brand to launch this feature on Roblox.

“We’re no stranger to having ‘firsts’ in the car audio industry, but now we’re excited to be the first commercialized brand to introduce an AI Character integration on the Roblox platform,” said Mike Anderson, Executive Director of the Alpine Brand Aftermarket Division at Alps Alpine North America, Inc. “This feature will be instrumental in engaging with the younger generation and provides them with a unique opportunity to learn about the Alpine brand in a more casual and approachable environment that’s tailored to their interests.”

The new integration, powered by Inworld AI, a developer platform for AI characters, allows users to chat with NPCs (non-playable characters) modeled after an Alpine “Brand Specialist” and an Alpine “Fandom Enthusiast.” The characters are preprogrammed to discuss Alpine’s product story and fandom using custom knowledge bases and distinct personalities designed to align with the Alpine brand.

The Alpine Brand Specialist, “Cohen,” represents the Alpine brand and is a wealth of product, tech, and service knowledge. His main objective is to educate users on the brand, help them feel empowered in their purchase decisions, and visit their local Alpine Authorized Retailer.

The Alpine Fandom Enthusiast, “Carlos,” is a longtime lover of the Alpine brand who enjoys an active weekend lifestyle. Donning the iconic Alpine “Chiclet” tee (available for purchase on the Alpine website www.alpine-usa.com), his main objective is to meet and engage with fellow Alpine fans and share their enthusiasm for the products and services of the brand.

In addition to providing a unique brand experience for the younger generation, the launch of this feature positions Alpine for future retail opportunities on and off the platform.

“Trigger XR is so excited to work with Alpine on this groundbreaking Roblox launch,” said Jason Yim, Founder and CEO of Trigger XR. “Not only will we be creating a fun and engaging playground and a showcase of Alpine’s products and personality, but it will also be the world’s first commercialization of Inworld’s AI character platform into Roblox. We believe this pioneering approach – applying character AI from the games industry to solve retail challenges – will set an early blueprint for both virtual and physical shopping experiences in the near future.”

Users can find the characters in Alpine Park on the “showroom” floor near the Alpine demo vehicles.

Roblox is a mass multiplayer platform with over 200 million active users each month and can be accessed online on a computer or PC, a smartphone via Google Play or the App Store, an Xbox gaming system, or a VR headset. Alpine Park can be found by searching “Alpine Park” on the Roblox platform or at https://www.roblox.com/games/12956278832/Alpine-Park
