Volunteer on a SEMA Council or Network and Help Steer the Aftermarket Forward

DIAMOND BAR, CA (08.31.23) – Volunteering can be a fulfilling and enriching experience for any professional looking to give back to the industry and the causes they care most about. For SEMA volunteers, it’s a way to get more involved in the aftermarket at large, contribute to the growth of their trade and develop new friendships and lasting memories in the process.

The nine communities in the SEMA Council and Network program have open volunteer positions within their subcommittees and task forces. Subcommittee and task force volunteers play a valuable role in helping council and network leadership create and execute meaningful programs that help their members succeed.

Many positions require minimal time (as little as one hour per month) and can work around the volunteers’ schedules.

“The professional relationships and friendships I have developed in the 10 years of volunteering with SEMA are some of the most important in my career,” reflected Amy Fitzgerald of Cool Hand Customs. “I am more confident, more knowledgeable and more comfortable with my industry and my peers.”

Opportunities are available in areas such as communications, events, education, membership, SEMA Show and council- and network-specific programs–allowing individuals to align their contributions with what they are most passionate about.

“Through the SEMA Businesswomen’s Network, I have had the opportunity to work on different subtasks, such as communications and events, to help expand my skill set and allow me more experience than what my usual job offers,” said Aliceje Keyburn of Yamaha Motor Corporation. “I’ve also attended different virtual events, live chats and leadership conferences that have been very beneficial in giving me practical tips and advice on how to help grow and advance my career, and also in dealing with certain situations within the workplace.”

Doug Frymer of the Law Office of Douglas A. Frymer, added, “Being in SEMA since I was 26 years old and in the Young Executives Network (now the Future Leaders Network) as part of a member company gave me a whole second crew of folks I’ve grown up within the industry. This catapulted me into what is now the Wheel & Tire Council, and involvement in the Automotive Restoration Market Organization, Hot Rod Industry Alliance and Import Performance Committee/Sport Performance Council (now the Emerging Trends & Technology Network). This gave me a whole second family, a network and a set of advice, opinions, mentors and camaraderie apart from the legal world.”

OCEAN CITY, MD (08.30.23) – KICKER returned to the East Coast as the title sponsor of the Ocean City Jeep Fest, held from August 24-27 and originated from the Ocean City (Md.) Convention Center. Located in front of the Convention Center entrance, KICKER and Jeep Fest hosted Jeeps from several local and national clubs, with several featuring custom KICKER installations. As an added bonus, there was a chance for showgoers to win a full KICKER bass system, including the TB-Series 10-inch loaded “tube” enclosure, 400-watt mono amplifier and wiring kit.

On Day-1 Jeep Fest 2023 open under a cloudy sky.

KICKER dealer Audio Works, Newark, DE, was installing audio systems on-site during the entire show and featured several audio packages for purchase created especially for Jeepers.  The AudioWorks tent was located next to the KICKER setup, which was supported by OPUS Marketing Team members Jamie White, Chuck Ottati and Greg Boylan.

Loaded Jeep demo vehicles were set up and Livin’Loud.

Jamie White, Opus Marketing Principal, related “With AudioWorks we had been on site a previous Jeep Fest events. Jeremy and Josh rolled in early and setup went smoothly. The AudioWorks crew arrived and everything was ready when the gates opened. Through the event we dodged wind and some rain drops. Overall sales were up from last year and we care looking forward to 2024.”

When Jeep Fest wrapped all gathered in front of the KICKER trailer for a group shot.

Darren Thomas, AudioWorks owner, stated “Our sales were definitely up over last year. Our store is located about 2 hours away in Newark and we towed a large trailer packed with KICKER inventory, installation kits and accessories plus supplies. Jeepers travel long distances and many come to Jeep Fest to purchase systems and have the systems installed. That way they are Livin’Loud as they return home. During the Jeep Fest we connected with a number of Jeepers who indicated they wanted to come by our store and buy a system for their Jeeps.”

AudioWorks Team members Matt, Kyle, Stephen, Tim and Pete joined Darren in the KICKER booth and installation tents at Jeep Fest.

The bays were filled with Jeeps for installations.

Customizing With Confidence: SEMA Garage to Release White Paper on an ADAS-Equipped Truck

DIAMOND BAR, CA (08.30.23) – In May, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) relating to the adoption of a new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) to require automatic emergency braking (AEB), including pedestrian AEB, systems on light vehicles. These systems utilize various sensors and components to automatically apply a vehicle’s brakes in a crash-imminent situation when a driver fails to brake enough or at all.

Rapid adoption of ADAS features raises new challenges–and opportunities–for vehicle modifiers.

Under the proposal, OEMs would be required to meet all the standard’s requirements within four years of publication. Small-volume manufacturers and alterers would have an additional year to comply.

NHTSA’s projections suggest the rule could save hundreds of lives and prevent tens of thousands of injuries to drivers, passengers and pedestrians annually. If adopted, the rule could significantly impact the aftermarket.

“Depending on the type of modification, and the vehicle make, model and year, it may be illegal to knowingly manufacture, sell or install any product–including aftermarket equipment–that would take a vehicle out of compliance with any safety standard, including the vehicle-based standards,” explained SEMA Senior Director of Federal Government Affairs Eric Snyder. “This is informally known as the ‘make inoperative’ provision. The implementation of a safety standard is what triggers the make-inoperative provision, and parts manufacturers must have a reasonable basis to conclude that their product won’t take a vehicle out of compliance with the standard.”

Currently, there is little data available to help anyone modifying an ADAS-equipped vehicle understand the exact degree of risk associated with changes to the vehicle. However, ongoing research at the SEMA Garage Detroit ADAS Research Center seeks to change all that.

MSC America Hosts Audiotec Fischer DSP Trainings

MESA, AZ (08.29.23) – MSC America, North American distribution partner for BLAM, Brax, Helix, Match, Escort Radar, and Stinger Radar, is proud to announce its new Audiotec Fischer DSP Training for invited authorized dealers. To date, MSC has conducted 15 one-day trainings at its Mesa, Ariz. facility, with more scheduled in the coming weeks.

“The purpose of these in-person trainings is to educate authorized Audiotec Fischer dealers on how to properly and efficiently set up and tune cars using proprietary software,” explained Jason Digos, MSC America Vice President. “We try to do as much hands-on as possible so that our dealers are in the cars using the software and performing the tuning process. We use simulators to show different scenarios they may see on today’s modern OEM audio systems and how to correct them.”

The software utilized in the trainings is the Audiotec Fischer DSP PC Tool Software, plus two cars equipped with Helix or Match DSP systems and MSC’s own System Simulator.

Left to Right above: Nik Edmonds (MSC America); Matt Hipps (Sounds Good Mobile; Flagstaff, AZ); Kraig Kinnard (Sounds Good Mobile; Flagstaff, AZ); Robert Gonzales (Sunshades Tint and Sound; Austin TX); Art Ceballos (Audio by Art; San Antonio, TX); Jason Digos (MSC America); and Christian Herrera (NOLA Sound Solutions; New Orleans, LA) during a recent Audiotec Fischer DSP Training at MSC America’s Mesa, AZ facility.

Digos added that the dealers who participate in the trainings are impressed with the software and the results such proprietary DSP has on tuning a vehicle properly.

“MSC’s training was truly an eye-opening experience for Kraig (Kinnard) and me,” said Matt Hipps of Sounds Good Mobile in Flagstaff, Ariz. who attended the July 13 training along with Kinnard. “We were thrilled to dive deep into Audiotec Fisher products, discovering how to maximize its potential. The training provided us with a forward-looking perspective on the industry, preparing us for the upcoming changes. We loved every bit of it, and enjoyed further building strong and meaningful relationships with their team and the fellow participants that were there.”

Added Larry Penn, MSC America President, “Our training is unique and quite comprehensive, and everyone who attends learns something specific to their needs. We have seen that from when the trainings begin to when they end, the attendees grasp things they never really thought about before but quickly realize its importance, and are then excited to institute this new knowledge into their daily work immediately.”

Concluded Arturo Ceballos, owner of Audio by Art of San Antonio, Texas, who was also a member of the July 13 training. “The MSC training was fantastic, allowing us to freshen up and pick up new tricks. I’m very happy to be a part of the MSC community, and I thank them for these opportunities.”
